Residential tower on 't Eilandje
Commissioned by Immpact & Kairos, Interbuild built a residential tower on the Kempische Dok. “The Doctoren” on the Island in Antwerp is a design by Binst Architects and Boydens engineering. This 81m-high tower was erected on the pre-existing foundation of the ZNA hospital. The building comprises 154 flats in 22 storeys with indoor and outdoor terraces. Large tree boxes were placed on the upper floors where the building becomes more slender, giving “The Doctoren” the tallest tree park in the city of Antwerp.
The prefabricated timber frame facades, finished in aluminium and varying in length from 3 to 10 metres, were produced in the Machiels Building Solutions production hall in Genk to arrive finished at the site. This made it unnecessary to erect the entire building on scaffolding. On the east side, from the 11th floor upwards, support scaffolding was used for the cantilevering of the superstructure.
The location of “The Doctoren”, right in the city centre, and the lack of storage space was quite a challenge for this site, a necessity to schedule all deliveries just-on-time.
