This work is the subject of a public procurement contract from Terkoest Alken Primary School, subsidised partly by the Flemish Agency for School Infrastructure (AGION) (for the nursery classrooms) and partly by Alken Municipal Council (for the gym).
Genk-based general contractor Machiels Building Solutions NV (MBS) started the earthworks on 30 September 2016. The building is made up of prefabricated timber-frame walls, floors and roofing. During the foundation works, the prefabricated timber construction components are being produced at MBS’s plant in Genk using low-carbon methods and sustainable materials. These timber-frame construction components come ready-fitted with insulation, exterior joinery, exterior and/or interior cladding, cables, service ducts and electrical boxes, meaning that the building can be assembled very quickly and efficiently.
The use of 3D design and industrial production prevents errors on site, which drastically reduces the construction time and avoids costly on-site repairs. The dry construction technique and the high level of prefabrication means that finishing can start as soon as the timber-frame construction components have been erected. This will be key to delivering the building in record time – by 1 June 2017!
Prefabricated timber components have excellent insulation values and short installation times. The certified fire-resistant timber-frame walls, with their very high levels of airtightness, substantial insulating capacity and much-enhanced acoustics (as legally required and absolutely essential in schools), are the ideal solution for high-quality and energy-efficient construction, ensuring a comfortable and healthy indoor environment.
